The Impact of
Separation and Divorce
Separation and divorce are traumatic in one way or
another for anyone associated with a divorcing
couple. The most severe impact is on the husband and
wife whose marriage is coming to an end. Broken
promises, guilt, hurt, resentment, broken promises
and lost love are but a few of the emotions that a
husband and wife endure in separation and divorce.
Like a stone tossed into a calm pond, the ripples of
divorce go out to the children, grandparents,
friends, and coworkers. In one way or another, a
divorce has repercussions far beyond the divorcing
couple.
Remember: There is a
solution.
Although separation and
divorce are hard, you can do many things that will
make the process easier and lessen the impact on
yourself and those around you. Her is an outline of
what you can do:
1. Understand that
divorce causes harm to yourself and people around
you.
2. Create a strategy to
reduce the emotional consequences of divorce.
3. Learn as much as you
can about the process.
4. Surround yourself
with people you can trust to give you reasoned,
objective advice.
5. Create a list of
goals related to settlement and/or litigation of
financial and non-financial aspects of your divorce.
6. Maintain realistic
expectations.
7. Work to achieve your
goals.
